AI Character Design

From Prompt to Personality

AI can generate an image in seconds. Building a character you can actually use is a different challenge.

I use generative tools as part of a broader visual development process — exploring appearance, personality, environments and variations before taking those assets into motion, compositing and traditional post-production workflows.

The goal isn’t the generation itself. It’s finding an idea worth developing, directing it with intention, and turning it into something that can tell a story.

Giving the Message a Face
National Pork Board

For this promotional piece, character development became a way to give personality to a simple message around certified pork. AI-assisted exploration helped establish the character and visual direction before bringing the final assets into the production and animation workflow.

Characters Built Around the Threat
Trend Micro

For Trend Micro, I developed two very different characters for a campaign about scams, identity theft and deceptive calls.

Rather than treating AI as the subject, we used it to create the personalities delivering the message. Each character required its own appearance, attitude and visual language before being animated through prompt-driven workflows and integrated into the final pieces.

One Character. Multiple Realities.
LEVEL UP

LEVEL UP pushed the process somewhere completely different.

The character had to move across multiple visual languages — from 8-bit animation and traditional 2D to 3D environments and a first-person sequence inspired by VR. Instead of maintaining one visual treatment, the challenge became preserving the idea while continuously changing the medium around it.

It became less about generating an image and more about using different tools to build one evolving visual journey.

The Prompt Is Only the Beginning

AI has changed how quickly I can explore an idea, but it hasn’t changed what I’m looking for.

A character still needs personality.
An image still needs direction.
And a sequence still needs a reason to exist.

The interesting part begins after the first generation.
